West Nile Virus Updates

Latest Information:
The Fulton County Board of Health has found mosquitos carrying West Nile Virus (WNV) in traps near the following areas:

• Big Trees Forest Preserve
• Hermann J. Russell West End Academy (Brown Middle School)
• South Fulton Center
• Grove Park
• Spring Valley Park
• Grant Park
• Washington Park
• Newtown Park

What is West Nile Virus?
West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States. Infected mosquitoes can spread the virus to people with a single bite. There are no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat WNV in people. However, most people infected with WNV do not feel sick. You should look out for the following symptoms:

• High Fever
• Headache
• Neck Stiffness
• Stupor
• Disorientation
• Tremors
• Convulsions
• Muscle Weakness
• Vision Loss
• Numbness & Paralysis
  
  

Mosquito Spraying
• Once infected mosquitoes are found, the Fulton County Board of Health begins spraying EPA approved adulticides within a quarter mile of affected areas once a week for at least four weeks. During this time Board of Health workers will be visiting nearby neighborhoods with more information about nighttime spraying.

How to Prevent West Nile Virus:
• The best way to prevent WNV is by containing the mosquito population. Practicing tip ‘n toss techniques is the easiest way to keep mosquitoes from laying eggs in and around your home. Remember that a mosquito can lay dozens of eggs in a single bottle cap filled with water.
• You should also make sure all gutters are clean, and window screens are properly installed around your home.
• Remember to wear clothing that covers your neck, legs, and arms, as well as EPA approved mosquito repellent when outdoors
