Fulton County Seeking Students To Serve As Youth Commissioners To Provide A Voice For Youth Issues

April 17, 2023
The Application Deadline is Friday, May 19, 2023, by 5 p.m.
Fulton County wants young people in search of leadership roles to apply to serve as Youth Commissioners. The Fulton County Youth Commission gets tomorrow’s leaders involved today by having its members address the many issues presently facing youth. The Fulton County Department of Community Development, Youth and Community Services Division is seeking high school students between 9th and 11th grades to participate in the program for the 2023-24 academic year. The application deadline is Friday, May 19, 2023, by 5 p.m.

The Fulton County Youth Commission (FCYC) is a leadership program for outstanding high school students in Fulton County, Georgia, whose primary purpose is to advocate for children and youth issues. Youth Commissioners volunteer as many as 20 hours per month for planning meetings and community projects and over 120 hours annually. In addition, the FCYC program strengthens the participant’s leadership skills, increases their interest in human services, and creates a means for communication between community leaders and Fulton County youth. Youth Commissioners are representatives and informants to their peers, community leaders, and Fulton County departments, providing a voice and the space to explore and address the most dynamic concerns youth face today.

“Our investments in the Youth Commission empower our young people to be leaders and become involved in the local government process,” said Reginald Crossley, Youth Commission Coordinator. “We must give our young men and women the skills that encourage leadership and service.”

Each year, approximately 30 Fulton County students join the Fulton County Youth Commission after a rigorous selection process.  Youth Commissioners who are accepted into the program will be expected to carry out the following responsibilities:
• Impact policies and legislation
• Interact with politicians on the local and state level
• Speak out on behalf of ALL Fulton County youth
• Help local government better understand the issues facing youth
• Plan community events and participate in volunteer projects

For consideration, students must meet the following criteria:
• Must be a resident of Fulton County
• Must attend a school within Fulton County (Fulton County Public Schools, Atlanta Public Schools, Private or Charter institution)
• Must be in the 9th -11th grade during the 2023-24 academic year
• Must submit a completed application and a two-page essay
